Business Bootcampers Chatter Box – featuring Melanie Ceveri
When did you know a career in beauty was for you?
As a teenager I began to look wistfully at the beauty pages of glossy magazines. I loved how beautiful and fun it all looked, I knew I wanted to be a part of making these beautiful pictures. However it wasn’t until I was 21 and had a child already that I realised I wanted to be the makeup artist.
Why did you become a makeup artist?
For the enjoyment and beauty of watching someone’s face come ‘alive’ with a little bit of colour.
Where do you get your creative ideas from?
I follow a lot of inspiring artists across different social media platforms, as well as looking at fashion, bridal, and different cultures. I flood my mind with beautiful images and an idea will always come to me in the middle of the night that keeps me awake with excitement.
What is your top beauty tip?
Water, I know it sounds boring but I rarely meet people that drink enough water and it makes a HUGE difference to your skin. Makeup shouldn’t be about hiding bad skin, it should be about enhancing gorgeous features and great skin.
What has been the biggest challenge of your career?
Self confidence. That sucker really holds you back. I know I love what I do though so I have kept pushing and have had some amazing training that has given me the confidence to push my business to the next level.
If you had 5mins with your younger self what would you tell yourself?
Drink more water, use more sunscreen, don’t take fitness for granted. I think the biggest thing really might be that you really CAN achieve what you want, it is not so far from reach as I assumed. Don’t let fear hold you back from following your dreams because it is SO worth it in the end.
What is your pet peeve within the makeup industry?
Bad hygiene, it’s disgusting, dangerous and unnecessary.
What product do you think is under appreciated by Makeup Artist today?
Sunscreen, yes I’m back to skin again. I did a little research and couldn’t find any bridal makeup artists using sunscreen. With a bit more research I have been able to find (in Japan) beautiful sunscreens that have no flashback, work well with the makeup and won’t leave my bride red faced for her honeymoon after a sunny summer wedding.
How have you found the Makeup Media and Marketing Bootcamp?
It’s crucial for a growing business to understand business things, pretty makeup skills won’t do it alone. Branding, marketing, bookkeeping, business plans… I know it may sound like the dark side of working for yourself but it can be fun and wonderful to set up your business professionally, watch it grow into something fabulous and have a real understanding of where your business is at. The Makeup Media and Marketing bootcamp has been really good to cover all these topics and more. The ladies are very helpful and friendly offering all their advice to help you grow your business to where you want it to be.
What is the biggest job/client you have done?
I have been very lucky to be on the ARTistHD makeup team and worked at the last two Miss Universe Australia Pageants, last year one of the girls I did makeup for won the Australian nationals.
Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
I live in a very regional area so I would love to see myself booked out most weekends of the year, with regular trips to Melbourne or wherever is necessary for commercial work. That’s not too far from where I’m at now so that’s very achievable.
